چکیده

Hydrodynamic and colloidal interactions are explored in concentrated, charge-stabilized colloidal dispersions by measuring the dependence of rheology (e.g., low and high-shear viscosity, high-frequency viscosity, and modulus) and self-diffusivity on salt content, particle size, and concentration. Model, sulfonated polystyrene lactices of varying diameter are prepared and investigated by shear rheology, high-frequency torsional resonance, electrophoresis, titration, and dynamic light scattering. The high-frequency and high-shear viscosity both are dominated by hydrodynamic interactions, but are shown not to be identical, due to the microstructure distortion resulting from high shear rates. The short-time self-diffusion is also shown to be insensitive to direct particle interactions, but has a different concentration dependence than the high-frequency viscosity, further illustrating a predicted violation of a generalized Stokes-Einstein relationship for these properties. The apparent colloidal surface charge is extracted from the high-frequency elastic modulus measurements on concentrated dispersions. The surface charge is in good agreement with results from critical coagulation concentration measurements and perturbation theories, but disagrees with electrophoretic mobility experiments. This indicates that the effective surface charge determined by torsional high-frequency measurements is a more reliable predicter of the salt stability of charge-stabilized dispersions, in comparison to zeta-potentials determined from electrophoretic mobilities. Further, we demonstrate by direct comparison that measurements of the apparent plateau modulus by rotational rheometry underestimate the true, high-frequency modulus and provide unreliable estimates for the surface charge. Interactions between surfactant-coated surfaces in hydrocarbon liquids containing functionalized polymer dispersant

Knowledge of the structure and interactions of mixed polymer/surfactant colloidal systems is essential for simultaneously controlling the stability and rheological properties of colloidal dispersions such as emulsions and lubricating oils [1, 2]. The surfactant and polymer together provide stability against coagulation and control the viscosity of the ̄uid, the practical aim being to produce hig...

Short–time rotational diffusion in monodisperse charge–stabilized colloidal suspensions

We investigate the combined effects of electrostatic interactions and hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on the short–time rotational self– diffusion coefficient Dr s in charge–stabilized suspensions. We calculate Dr s as a function of volume fraction φ for various effective particle charges and various amounts of added electrolyte. The influence of HI is taken into account by a series expansion of...

Simulating (electro)hydrodynamic effects in colloidal dispersions: smoothed profile method.

Previously, we have proposed a direct simulation scheme for colloidal dispersions in a Newtonian solvent (Phys. Rev. E 71, 036707 (2005)). An improved formulation called the "Smoothed Profile (SP) method" is presented here in which simultaneous time-marching is used for the host fluid and colloids. The SP method is a direct numerical simulation of particulate flows and provides a coupling schem...

Electrosteric Stabilization of Colloidal Dispersions

The electrosteric stabilization of model colloidal dispersions is quantified through high-frequency rheometry and complementary techniques. Model aqueous dispersions with a poly(butyl acrylate)polystyrene core and a layer of poly(methacrylic acid) grafted onto the surface are prepared and characterized. The influence of pH, electrolyte concentration, and amount of polymer in the stabilizing lay...
